During orthodontic treatment, the consumption of acidic beverages (cola, soda, energy drinks, some fruit juices) is restricted by dentists because they cause significant damage to tooth enamel and orthodontic materials. Acidic drinks cause demineralization (erosion and weakening) of tooth enamel. When brackets are on the teeth, this erosion leads to the formation of permanent white or brown stains around the brackets (the beginning of cavities). Furthermore, acid can cause the special adhesives holding the brackets to dissolve over time, making the brackets easily detach. Bracket detachment can also cause the treatment process to take much longer than planned. For these reasons, acidic drinks should be avoided, and if consumed, a straw should always be used, followed by rinsing the mouth thoroughly with water.
Why is the consumption of acidic beverages strictly forbidden or restricted during orthodontic treatment?
