What is a placeholder and why is it used?

A space maintainer is a special appliance used to protect the space left by prematurely lost primary teeth in children. When a primary tooth is removed prematurely, neighboring teeth can shift into the space, blocking the space where the permanent tooth will emerge. By maintaining this space, a space maintainer prevents future crowding and orthodontic problems.
