How long does tooth pain last after orthodontic treatment begins or after braces are tightened?

Updated on: April 27, 2026

When orthodontic treatment first begins, a certain force is applied to the tooth roots when brackets and wires are placed. This biomechanical force is completely expected and normal to cause sensitivity, a feeling of pressure while chewing, and mild pain in the teeth during the first few days. Generally, this pain and sensitivity gradually decrease and disappear within the first 3 to 5 days. Similarly, a slight tension lasting 1-2 days may be felt after the wires are changed or tightened at monthly check-up appointments. Mild pain relievers recommended by your doctor can be used during this adjustment period, and eating soft foods will make the adaptation process much more comfortable.
