Piezoelectric surgery is a modern technology that cuts bone tissue with microscopic ultrasonic vibrations (sound waves) and is revolutionizing jaw surgery. Conventional rotary burs or bone saws can tear or severely damage surrounding soft tissues, blood vessels, and nerves when cutting bone; whereas piezoelectric devices are only sensitive to hard bone tissue and, even if they come into contact with soft tissues, the inferior alveolar nerve, or the sinus membrane, they bounce off these flexible structures without causing damage. This minimizes the risk of numbness, bleeding, and tissue trauma after surgery, resulting in much faster healing of postoperative swelling (edema).
What are the advantages of piezoelectric (ultrasonic) bone cutting technology over conventional surgical milling machines in orthognathic surgery?
