What are the criteria for preferring bio-resorbable (absorbable) plates over titanium in “Rigid Internal Fixation” (RIF) systems after orthognathic surgery?

In orthognathic surgery, titanium plates and screws, standardly used to fix bone segments, can remain in the body for life and offer excellent mechanical resistance; however, in some cases, patients may not want to feel these metals in their bodies or may report discomfort in cold weather. Bio-resorbable (made from polylactic/polyglycolic acid polymers) plates and screws, on the other hand, are completely absorbed by the body within approximately 1-2 years after bone fusion is complete, replacing the natural bone tissue and eliminating the need for removal in a second surgery. However, the mechanical strength of resorbable systems is lower compared to titanium, they are thicker, and they require shaping in special hot water baths during surgery, thus prolonging the operation time; therefore, they are generally preferred in maxillary surgeries where excessive load is not applied or in surgeries for growing children.
