What is the effect of genioplasty (chin tip aesthetics) surgery on the functional movements of the lower jawbone (mandible) and the chewing muscles?

Genioplasty is a surgical procedure that involves cutting and moving a segment of the bone at the tip of the lower jaw forward, backward, upward, or downward. This operation does not directly alter the chewing mechanism (occlusion); it is purely an aesthetic and profile-enhancing intervention. However, when the chin bone is cut, the genioglossus and geniohyoid muscles attached to it also move with the bone. Especially in cases where the chin is shifted forward, the stretching of these muscles prevents the tongue from falling back, alleviating sleep apnea symptoms and opening the airway in the throat. The chewing muscles (masseter and temporal) are not directly affected by this operation; therefore, the patient does not experience any loss or weakening in biting force or chewing function of the lower jaw after genioplasty.
