What interventions are necessary if bleeding persists for a long time (leakage) after an impacted tooth extraction?

Updated on: April 27, 2026

Following an impacted tooth extraction, the basic rule for stopping bleeding is to firmly bite down on the sterile gauze pad placed in the mouth for at least 30-45 minutes. A slight pink or reddish discharge in the saliva during the first 24 hours is not considered bleeding and is normal. However, if blood continuously accumulates in the mouth instead of discharge, and active bleeding continues despite changing the gauze pad, intervention is necessary. Patients can place a clean, damp tea bag (the tannic acid it contains constricts blood vessels) on the bleeding area and firmly bite down for about half an hour. Also, never rinse your mouth, spit, or consume hot drinks. If active bleeding continues for another 1-2 hours despite these measures, you must immediately contact the surgeon who performed the operation or the nearest dental emergency room.
